OLD HOMESCHOOLERS NEVER DIE . . . THEY JUST WRITE CURRICULUM

like showers on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants."

Newsletter Articles

In 2013 the Lord started me producing a newsletter for the homeschool group we are a part of. Every other month I write an article on a topic the Lord has put on my heart. I've decided to add these articles to this blog. I hope you will find encouragement through some of my ramblings. You can click on the label "Newsletter" to find the articles.

  • Bible Reading
    • I remembered that we had a chronological Bible, so I got that out (after searching high and low for it, then my husband found it on my closet shelf) this year. We started up at the ordination of the Priests. It seemed about the right place to start since we read Genesis in first grade and Exodus in second grade. However, K. wants to hear stories, so we may go back to her Bible and start reading in Joshua.
  • The Princess and the Kiss

  • The Princess and the Kiss: Lesson 13 in the Life Lessons book. This lesson is about not making decisions based on your feelings, but on God's Word and giving Him your whole heart and about reaping what you sow (or plant). We did two art projects with this lesson.
    • The first was to remind us that our feeling change and are "blown about" by circumstances. We took paper and colored an ocean scene with a wavy ocean. Then we took brown paper and drew a boat and cut it out and wrote "FEELINGS" on it. We used a brad to attach the boat to the ocean scene, so it would rock back and forth.
    • For the second project, I drew four seeds on a large piece of paper and colored them. We named them faithfulness, love, kindness, and joy. K. drew a stem and flower from each seed. We talked about what we reap if we plant these characteristics in our lives. We decided on trust, love, friends, and happiness. Then I drew roots coming from each seed and dirt around the seeds and roots. We talked about how roots get nourishment for plants, and where would she get nourishment to plant these things in her life. Then I wrote "God's Word" below the roots.

Second Grade, Bible, Set Four

Week One:

  • Memory Verse: John 1:15
  • Searching for Treasure: Review section 2; Study 11, Introduction; One of the days of review was about the wise man and the foolish man building their houses on the rock or sand. We read the verses and noticed that the difference between the wise and the foolish was not that the did or didn't hear God's Word, but that they did or didn't do what God said. That led to a story from another book about the verse "be ye doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves". We also had a discussion about good fruit and bad fruit stemming from Proverbs 1:31, "eating the fruit of their ways".

One of my goals for this planning week is to figure out how to take this prayer time from a "task to be completed" to a time where I am showing K. that prayer is part of our relationship with God and enjoyable.

Second Grade, Bible, Set One

Week One:
  • This week we sang A Child of the King.
  • We memorized Exodus 20:1-3. I wrote the verses on construction paper cut in the shape of stone tablets. On Friday, I gave her an extra one and had her illustrate something about the verses. K. drew the Israelites being delivered from Egypt.
  • Searching for Treasure: each day we did a reading and answered the questions. The first day I read the passage from the NKJV. I decided that I was going to have to spend a lot of time explaining what words meant, so I got our New Life Version and we are using it. We take turns reading. I'll read the odd number and she reads the even number verses.
  • We have started Spy for the Night Riders about Martin Luther in the Trailblazer series by Dave and Neta Jackson. We are reading one chapter a day.
  • One day a week we review our catechism.
  • We have started a new page in our prayer journal.
  • We continue to review the passages we have memorized in kindergarten and first grade in the car.
Week Two:
  • This week K. chose Tell Me the Stories of Jesus for our hymn.
  • We memorized Exodus 20:4 and 7a
  • I read Exodus 1 - 6 to her from the NKJV Bible. I had pictures from the stories for K. to color while I read.
  • Searching for Treasure: this study is going very well. K. is really listening to the scripture and being able to answer the three or four questions each day.
  • We only have two more chapters in Spy for the Night Riders.
  • We reviewed our catechism on Wednesday.
  • We are adding more items to our prayer journal.
  • We didn't go anywhere this week, so we didn't review our memory passages. Hmm, maybe I need to re-evaluate this method.
Week Three:
  • This week we sang A Shelter in the Time of Storm for our hymn.
  • Our memorization was Exodus 20:7b, 8, and 12
  • We did lesson nine in Life Lessons from the Princess and the Kiss. The discussion was that "keeping your kiss" doesn't just have to do with keeping your kisses for your husband, but also means to guard your heart and how your senses are the doors to your heart. One day I read Mrs. Rosey-Posey and the Chocolate Cherry Treat since it goes right along with being set-apart and keeping your life pure.
  • Searching for Treasure: we are learning much about wisdom. I'm glad I found this book, and that we are going at this slow pace.
  • We finished Spy for the Night Riders and started The Queen's Smuggler about William Tyndale.
  • We didn't review our catechism until Friday.
  • We already have some answers to prayer!
  • We were out two days this week, so we did get some review done.
Week Four:
  • Our song this week was I'll be a Sunbeam. K. thinks she would like to sing it at the graduation program this year.
  • We memorized Exodus 20:13 - 16
  • Searching for Treasure: in the Bible we are reading from it uses the term "strong words" instead of "reproof". This morning I was telling K. that she needed to put the books away properly. I was speaking in a quiet, stern manner. She said that she didn't like it when I spoke to her like that. I sat down and put my arm around her and asked her and asked her if she thought I was using "strong words". She said yes. I then was able to remind her that the wise person learns from strong words but the fool hates them.
  • We are continuing to enjoy The Queen's Smuggler.
  • We reviewed our catechism on Wednesday.
  • We have added more prayer requests.
  • We were home all week, so we didn't review.
Week Five:
  • Living for Jesus was our song this week.
  • Exodus 20:17 completed our memorization of the 10 Commandments
  • We learned Catechism #78, 80, and 81
  • Searching for Treasure: we are having lots of conversations about being a wise girl instead of a fool.
  • The Queen's Smuggler has gotten very exciting!
  • We reviewed our catechism on Wednesday
  • We are continuing to pray each day.
  • We were able to review two passages this week.

First Grade, Bible, Set Seven

  • We are continuing to memorize 1 Corinthians 13.
  • In 24 Ways we are on #2, Reading the Bible and Praying everyday with an open heart. We have discussed what an "open heart" means, and I am able to pull examples from our memory verses, so that makes it more meaningful.
  • We finished reading Genesis.
  • We completed the Friendship book and are working on making a board game from what we learned.
  • In lesson seven of Life Lessons from P & K,  we were learning about godly wisdom. The book suggested making a paper crown, but K. has so many crowns that I knew it wouldn't be special. I looked online for crown crafts and came up with this one. The beads are supposed to be on safety pins, and then hung from a larger safety pin to make a pin to wear, but I decided to just use things I had on hand, so we came up with this craft.

We put the beads on floral wire, and wrapped
the extra wire around a popsicle stick.
I used another piece of wire to make a hanger.

I had wooden alphabet letters (just about every letter
except W, so we turned an extra M upside down)
and K. painted them and we glued them on a tongue
depressor, and then glued the stick with
"WISDOM" onto  the popsicle stick.
  • We finished reading Joel this week and played some games to review 1 Corinthians 13.

First Grade, Bible, Set Six

  • We have started memorizing 1 Corinthians 13 (which is different from my original plan, but I think a better choice). We will memorize verses 1 - 8a, and 13.
  • We have memorized quite a few verses and passages of scripture and I like for K. and myself to review them regularly, but with the volume, it is becoming burdensome. I am trying to figure out a way to review, but have fun too.
    • We made a holder that has two pockets -- two envelopes glued back to back. We each decorated one side. Then we wrote the references on pieces of pretty paper and stuck them in side one. Each time we get in the car we will pick a paper and recite that passage of scripture. Then we put the reference in side two of the packet. That should have us reviewing three or four passages a week.

  • Our hymn this set is What a Friend we Have in Jesus. It is calmer than the other hymns we have sung and I was wondering if K. would like it. The accompaniment is beautiful and she really likes it.
  • We started reading Joel: A Boy of Galilee this week. It is very interesting and a couple times I've read past "Bible Time" and into "Math Time".
  • Now that we have been using the above method to review our Bible verses for a few weeks, I can tell you that it is working very well. In fact, K. will remind me when we get in the car that she is supposed to pick a paper for our review.

First Grade, Bible, Set Five

  • We started the second part of Little Pilgrim's Progress this week.
  • The two "Ways" from 24 Ways for this set, about being content and generous, are really making for good discussions.
  • K. brought me a book this week and said, "We should read this book for Bible. It is about being content." The book is The Runaway Flying Horse by Bonzon. She showed me on the last page that is says that the horse was content. We did read it for Bible one day and when we were through she said, "It is about learning to be content with where you live because God put you there."
  • We read Genesis 29 - 35. I truly believe that God can close children's ears because K. did not ask questions about anything she isn't ready to hear about (and I'm not ready to explain).
  • Chapter 6 in the Friendship book was really good on being content with what we have (including our talents) and not envying our friends because everything we have, and everything our friends have is a gift from God.
